About Methyl Rattery and Keeping Rats.
I have had pets my whole life, I grew up with horses and big dogs, always had at least two cats and the rule as I grew up was that I could have any pet I wanted, as long as I could afford to look after it and it stayed in my room. I have had many, many pets, and as much as I loved each and every one of them it soon became apparent that rats were the ones that I 'clicked' with. I have had a house full of them ever since.
So...Rats as Pets?
Rats make fantastic pets, they are affectionate, meticulously clean, and can be trained to do a whole host of tricks. They actively seek human attention and enjoy time with their pet humans, and are extremely tolerant. For this reason they make fantastic pets for families with small children. While being more interactive than other small pets, rats are also higher maintenance. They need more space, more time, and food often needs researching to get right as home made mixes are more widely used than shop bought foods due to suitability.
Rats don't have 'breeds', all domestic rats are the same species and breed, the Norway Rat, Brown Rat or Rattus norvegicus depending on which you would like to use, but they all mean the same thing. The different ear positions, coat types and coat colours and markings are called varieties. When I speak to people about rehoming kittens from me, I will often ask for any preferred varieties, or any varieties to be avoided.
Where do my rats go?
I have homed many rats over the past few years, and currently have rats living with families in North Wales, Nottingham, Knusford, Delamere, Stockport, Marple, Preston, Bolton and all over Manchester, as well as a few with two other local breeders.
What do I breed?
Primarily I breed topaz; it is by far my favourite variety and I happen to think a good topaz rat is an absolutely stunning animal. Along with this I will often get buff, agouti and black. My aim is to breed away from the kidney and blood clotting issues that unfortunately so often accompany this variety. There aren't all that many of them on the show bench at the moment, so it is nice to see them on there too, and some of mine at the moment are doing quite well both in pets and varieties.
